Picture of round tables in a restaurant

When I was one of the seven chosen for the fulltime board year during my studies we were all invited independently in secret. We knew others were chosen but not who.

The first night that we were introduced to each other we were specifically seated at a round table. The idea: at a round table you can talk and look at everyone, which leads to a better connection.

After experiencing that I've always preferred round tables. It was such a magical experience.

Long straight tables felt suddenly so isolating. Trying to start a conversation between yourself and your direct left and right neighbour leads to awkward gymnastics. It's second nature on a round table.

Some other cultures have actually integrated this. The Chinese famously use round tables in group settings. I love this as a default.

I hope we can move to more round tables too in our world.
